Many people think serious off-road caravans need two axles.
But some experienced travellers deliberately choose a single axle instead.
Why?
Because single axle caravans are often lighter, easier to manoeuvre and can be surprisingly capable off-road.
And while many people assume choosing a single axle means sacrificing comfort, today’s caravans prove that’s not necessarily true.
So in this post, we have a look at 8 single-axle off-road caravans that are currently available in Australia.
Along the way you’ll see everything from compact camper-style caravans through to luxury off-road caravans worth more than $200,000. 😳
I used the Australian RV Directory to find ALL the single axle off-road caravans currently available in Australia. It came up with hundreds (!!) but I just chose 8 of the lightest, while still covering a variety of caravan types and price points.
If you want the Australian RV Directory, you can buy it here. 👇

Let’s get started.
Mobi Nomad XL
Let’s start with the smallest RV on this list.

The Mobi Nomad XL weighs just 760kg tare and has a total length of only 3.7m.
Now this one sits somewhere between a camper trailer and a caravan. It features a pop-up roof, external kitchen and external ensuite, while still providing enough internal space to sit comfortably inside and escape the weather.
With a GVM of 1,750kg, it’s also one of the easiest caravans on this list to tow.

If your priority is travelling light and getting into places that would be difficult with a larger caravan, this could be worth a closer look.

Exodus Off Road Exodus 18
At the other end of the spectrum is the Exodus 18 by Exodus Off Road (formerly Complete Campsite).

This hybrid camper features a pop-up roof and a monocoque fibreglass body, helping to keep weight down while maintaining durability.
You can have the standard external kitchen, add an internal kitchen, choose an internal shower and toilet, or even configure it with bunks.
So rather than forcing buyers into a single floorplan, the Exodus can be tailored to suit different travel styles.

With a tare weight of 2,100kg and an ATM of 3,000 kg, it offers impressive capability for a van this size.

Maverick Campers Cobra 16HL
The Cobra 16HL is a good example of how much comfort can be packed into a relatively compact off-road caravan.

This pop-top caravan features both an internal and external kitchen, an island queen bed and an ensuite with a separate shower and toilet.
The adjustable independent suspension is designed for rough Australian conditions, while the pop-top design helps keep overall height down when travelling.

Starting from around $76,000, it’s also one of the more affordable caravans in this video.

ATM: 3000kg
Total Length: 7.386m

Capstone Caravans H6D
If you’re travelling with children, the Capstone H6D offers something many compact off-road caravans don’t… bunks.

Inside you’ll find a north-south king bed plus bunk beds, making it suitable for family travel.
There’s also an internal and external kitchen, a combined shower and toilet, and a surprisingly generous 3,500 kg ATM.

Considering prices start from around $66,000, it represents one of the most affordable family-friendly off-road caravans currently available.

Long Haul Campers T-Rex T16 Ensuite Bunks
The T-Rex T16 is another family-focused option, but it takes a slightly different approach.

It features a pop-top design, external kitchen and bunk beds, while still fitting within a compact 6.8 metre overall length.
The queen bed sits on a fold-out bed extension, helping maximise interior living space.

Long Haul Campers have built this model with heavy-duty independent coil suspension and quad shock absorbers, reinforcing its off-road credentials.

On the Move Caravans Adventure 5.7F
The Adventure 5.7F is another caravan designed with families in mind.

It combines an east-west queen bed with bunk beds, an internal kitchen and a combined shower and toilet.
At almost eight metres long overall, it’s one of the larger caravans on this list, demonstrating that single axle caravans don’t necessarily have to be tiny.

The independent wishbone suspension is designed for off-road touring, while the 3,000 kilogram ATM keeps it within reach of many popular tow vehicles.

Mars Campers Venus 17HR MKII
The Mars Venus 17HR MKII includes one of the more interesting sleeping arrangements in this video.

Its king-size bed extends out the side of the caravan on a fold-out section, helping create a spacious interior layout without dramatically increasing travel length.
You also get both an internal and external kitchen, a separate shower and toilet, and a club lounge that can convert into another bed.

Starting from around $75,000, it packs a lot of features into a relatively affordable package.

Mountain Trail RV LXV 5.8S
Let’s finish with arguably the most premium caravan in today’s video.

The LXV 5.8S from Mountain Trail RV starts at over $213,000 and includes some impressive engineering.
The standout feature is its electronic air suspension system, which offers multiple ride-height settings depending on terrain and conditions.
Inside you’ll find an island queen bed, separate shower and toilet, and the sort of finish you’d expect at this end of the market.

With a tare weight of 2,537kg and an ATM of 3,150kg, it’s clear that this caravan is aimed at buyers wanting premium off-road capability without stepping up to a tandem axle platform.

As you can see, choosing a single axle caravan doesn’t mean there’s only one type of RV available.
Whether you’re looking for a lightweight camper, a family bunk van, a hybrid camper or a luxury off-road caravan, there are plenty of options to choose from.
Don’t forget, you can use the Australian RV Directory to find all the caravans (new) in Australia, that fit your criteria… not just the one’s that google will show you.
Rather than relying on whichever manufacturers have the biggest advertising budgets, you can filter and compare hundreds of RVs side by side and discover options you might never have otherwise found.

So, if you were heading around Australia, would you choose a single axle caravan or a tandem axle caravan?
